How Not to Do a Restoration

that does look bad, but i don't know the technical reasons why. it seems like the restorer put the pattern of the sky in the missing bit...no? is that your handywork?

That appears to be what the restorer did. I did not do this; it was in a museum in Faenza. You're right, it's bad because it looks bad. It's distracting and keeps you from being able to read the piece.
